My thoughts are that by opening up our untapped energy resources will make a big change, along with some ‘ outside the box’ thinking on what is important and what is not.
Start with the obvious waste, rethink needs and wants. Cover the basics, and take a very critical look at anything else. Make the government have to make the same choices we have to on a daily basis.
Gear the entire military with new thinking in regard to special forces and asymmetrical warfare. No more thinking more is better. The old days of big and slow need to be replaced with nimble and fast, coupled with effectiveness. Outer space is the new frontier.

All excellent ideas, Bert. In my humble opinion, the reason none of this is likely to happen is that the "elected" officials and their appointees and agents are there to enrich themselves, not us. I think those at the top of this matrix hate us, while the everyday folks working beneath them have no clue what they are actually propping up.
I hope I am wrong.
Oh, and I would prefer that they spend their time and attention on earthly matters like getting the heck out of our personal lives, and not on outer space (unless we can send them all there forever, haha). Let's fix the ground floor before adding a second story!
